ENSO Signals Recorded by Ash Tree Rings in Iberian Riparian Forests

چکیده

Climate–atmospheric patterns affect ecological processes. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) represents the strongest global source of climate variability at annual scales, but its impacts on Mediterranean forests are still understudied. Here, ENSO signals recorded by river flow and radial growth series riparian uncovered in middle Ebro basin, northeastern Spain. A chronology or mean tree ring widths (period 1970–2018, 27 trees) was built for narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia). Growth indices increased as did during prior winter from May to September. Ash hydrological year were positively related (r = 0.54, p < 0.001), suggesting that a higher soil moisture enhances growth. This correlation remained significant after taking out influence precipitation. −0.46, 0.001) −0.30, 0.03) negatively associated with January Index (SOI). These relationships suggest high SOI values corresponding La Niña events lead reduced flow, thus decreasing Further approaches could be used better understand how drought-prone subjected increasing aridity.

Patterns and Drivers of Tree Mortality in Iberian Forests: Climatic Effects Are Modified by Competition

Tree mortality is a key process underlying forest dynamics and community assembly. Understanding how tree mortality is driven by simultaneous drivers is needed to evaluate potential effects of climate change on forest composition. Using repeat-measure information from c. 400,000 trees from the Spanish Forest Inventory, we quantified the relative importance of tree size, competition, climate and...

Nitrate Dynamics in Riparian Forests: Groundwater Studies

This study was conducted to assess the removal of groundwater nitrate (NOa-) in different soil drainage classes within three riparian forests located in Rhode Island. A solution of NOa-and a conservative tracer [either bromide (Br-) or chloride (CI-)] was applied in growing and the dormant seasons to trenches upgradient of wetland locations with hydric soils (poorly and very poorly drained soil...

Denitrification in riparian forests receiving agricultural discharges

Riparian forests can remove large amounts of nitrate from the groundwater discharges of adjacent uphill croplands. We review the mechanisms that could account for NO3 removal. Denitrification is hypothesized to be important, but measurement problems limit the relevant field data. We used large chambers (1-20 mZ) and tunable-diode laser infrared spectrophotometry to measure nitrous oxide (NzO) e...

Nitrate Dynamics in Riparian Forests: Microbial Studies

While riparian forests have a demonstrated ability to remove nitrate (NO3-) moving from uplands before it enters streams, there is considerable uncertainty as to the mechanisms of NOr removal in these areas. We characterized spatial and temporal variation in denitrification enzyme activity (DEA), microbial biomass C and N content, soil respiration and potential net N mineralization and nitrific...

Reconstructing the temperature degree of the warm seasons through Quercus persica tree rings in Zagros forests Dena region

Trees can record long-term effects of climate variables. Using dendroclimatology knowledge, we can reconstruct such variables especially for areas which have short-term climatic data. For this purpose, we reconstructed the temperature degree of the warm months (May-September) through annual rings width of Quercus persica and regression analysis of data obtained from stations on Dena region. Wit...
